Motivate Your Kid To Do Chores

When Lucas turned two last year, he was already eager to learn and explore new activities. Curiosity got the best out of him by getting involved in household chores. Now, he has been helping us whenever he is capable of doing so.

Kids like him are very interested to try out and discover new things. They start to imitate our actions and movement through our daily housework.

“Chores show kids that families are built on mutual obligations and that family members need to help each other.”

Here are some simple steps on how to encourage/ motivate your kids to help out:

1. Don’t push them to do chores.

Make them choose if they want to try and help out. Just make sure they are simple chores like wiping the table or sweeping the floor, etc. But then again, it’s still up to you to decide whether your child can do it or not.

2.  Make chores more fun.

Doing chores can make them tired. But if your little one wants to help out, make the work more fun for both of you. You can turn on some music and sing along or talk to them while you do the chores together.

3.  Build relationships through chores.

This is a great way to bond with your child. As early as now, you can show and teach them the things they need to learn. You can explain to them that part of growing up is getting these kinds of responsibilities.

4.  Don’t turn chores into punishment.

If your child misbehaves or does something wrong, don’t make chores as a consequence or punishment. This will give them a negative impression and they might not help out in the future.

5.  Compliment them for a job well done.

Kids feel good (like adults) when they are complimented. Encourage and praise them by saying, “Thank you for helping out.” or “You did a wonderful job!” Giving high five is also an option.

6.  Allow kids some autonomy.

Give your kids some confidence by allowing them to discover new ways. Let them give inputs. The more independent they feel, the more motivated they will be to take the tasks and accomplish them.
